Casino de la Playa at Marianao Beach Cuba

Interesting old photos of Casino de la Playa and upscale Marianao in Havana Cuba.

Marianao is home to a sprawling former military base, the Columbia Fortress, built by the U.S. after the defeat of Spain in 1898. When Cuba’s Revolutionary Army liberated Havana in January 1959, this was dictator Fulgencio Batista’s last stronghold.

It is now called Ciudad Libertad (Liberty City).

Wifredo Lam also lived in that neighborhood.

VERY NICE PHOTO. I KNOW THAT THE CASINO NACIONAL OF MARIANAO BEACH WAS DEMOLISHED AROUND 1956, BUT ¿WHERE EXACTLY LOCATED THE CASINO NACIONAL BUILDING?
EVERYBODY SAID THAT WAS LOCATED AT MARIANAO BEACH. OK
BUT I WANT TO KNOW THE EXACTLY LOCATION OF THE BUILDING. eg. TEN METERS FROM THE SEA, OR, BESIDES THE X,Y,Z, CAMP, OR BETWEEN THIS AND THAT FACILITIES, ETC…

FINALLY I KNOW MORE ABOUT THE NAT CASINO.

THE NAT CASINO WAS LOCATED AT THE END OF CALLE 120 ENTRE CALLE 11 Y CALLE 11-A IN A YARD THAT WAS PART OF THE HAVANA COUNTRY CLUB GOLF COURSE. TODAY NO CONSTRUCTION IS THERE. IS AN EMPTY YARD BESIDES THE “ESCUELA NACIONAL DE ARTES PLÁSTICAS” IN FRONT OF THE FORMER “CASA CLUB” OF THE HAVANA COUNTRY CLUB.

When (year)  the fountain (women sculpture) was moved out?  I know actually you can find it at Tropicana Night Club.  The demolition was because the building was in bad shape, or because this gambler activity switched toward the new hotels and better areas?

Sorry, don’t know when the sculpture was moved but I would imagine shortly after 1959.

Thanks Manuel for the photo. See above.

THE FOUNTAIN WAS MOVED TO TROPICANA´S YARD IN 1956, WHEN THE NATIONAL CASINO WAS DEMOLISHED. THE DEMOLITION WAS IN ORDER TO GIVE A BETTER LANDSCAPING FOR THE HAVANA COUNTRY CLUB GOLF COURSE , AND BECAUSE THE “CASA CLUB” OF THE SAME, OPERATES IN THOSE YEARS AS A CASINO.

Interesting. Thanks.

I thought it was moved because the casino was closed.

I lived in Cuba in December 1958 into January (as a young American girl) with the late screen actor Raymond Burr.  The villas he rented was a white adobe on a hillside.  I remember seeing it allot in my youth in press photos, but I cannot find that picture anymore.  I only see photos of the flat area downtown with old homes.  Last time I saw a picture of the villa where Raymond lived it was in need of great repairs.  My last pair of shoes came from a large shoe store in downtown Havana, and I remember the owner looking scared and unsure about the changes happening to his country.
