Havana.- Pinar del Río province, Cuba’s westernmost region, is carrying out a wide-ranging program to preserve the physical conditions of beaches.

Pinar del Río’s authorities pay special attention to the use of the coast and are implementing scientific programs to preserve the largest reserve of black coral in the country, located along the coast of María la Gorda, and pristine landscapes on the northern keys.

The Guancahabibes Peninsula alone, in the province’s westernmost tip, has 20 beaches. Authorities are implementing environmental education programs and projects to regenerate damaged coastal areas.

An outstanding work has been done in Las Cañas beach, south of the city of Pinar del Río, where white sand was added to improve the seabed’s consistency.

In addition, autochthonous plant species have been planted and constructions erroneously built on the dunes have been demolished.

Cuba offers diverse travel and exploration opportunities.

Cuban ecotours should be a real draw for American tourists.
