Havana.- The Trinidad-Sancti Spiritus tourist destination, in central Cuba, reported the best results in history during the January-April period this year.

Officials from the leisure industry said that the province reported revenues of 22 million dollars, according to the official exchange rate, accounting for a 15-percent growth compared to the same period last year.

They added that profits increased by 560,000 dollars, in contrast to the first four months of 2002.

Over 60,000 vacationers, mainly from Germany, France, Canada, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom visited the region, where two of the first seven villages founded by the Spanish colonizers in the 16th century are located: Sancti Spiritus and Trinidad.

The latter, founded 489 years ago, boasts tourist values of historic and cultural interest, which can be found in both the town and the so-called Valle de los Ingenios (Sugarmill Valley), which were declared World Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
