Havana.- The province of Pinar del Río, in the westernmost tip of Cuba, is working on the promotion of nature tourism this year.

The leisure industry’s revenues are expected to grow by 20 percent this year, when 360,000 vacationers will visit the province.

Pinar del Río boasts major natural attractions, including Sierra del Rosario and the Guanacahabibes Peninsula, two of Cuba’s six biosphere reserves, in addition to the Viñales Valley, which was declared World Cultural Landscape.

During this year’s first trimester, 60 cabins will be completed in several establishments, and renovations works were completed at the thatched-roof restaurant at the Mural of Prehistory, the “caneyes” at Palenque de Cimarrones and the dock and other facilities at María la Gorda, which were severely hit by hurricanes.

The province boasts unique elements in Cuba’s geography, like the “mogotes” (round-top mountains), archeological sites of great historic interest, and a large number of endemic plant and animal species.
