Spanish Hotel Group Barcelo is to increase its presence in Cuba"s tourism, with the building of 5,000 new leisure facilities, a digital report on Caribbean News indicated Tuesday.
Caribbean News adds that recent reports from Barcelo Hotels & Resorts, one of the most important consortiums in Spain, has eyes on Santa Maria Key to develop its Beach Resort option, which has earned well-deserved fame in hotels in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, and plans seven new facilities here by 2010.
Two of those hotels will be built by mixed Hispanic-Cuban companies.
Barcelo Hotels & Resorts Company will open 629 rooms in Cayo Santa Maria this year, another one of 186 rooms in Havana"s Monte Barreto area, and a third with 358 rooms in Varadero to be called Barcelo Arenas Blancas.
Not sure what they mean by 5000 new leisure facilities. Since it’s Prensa Latina, they only report what they are told by the Cuban government and the Cuban government does not allow any independent press or release any third party verifiable business information so “terms of the deal were not disclosed” would be the way to read this one.

Not to change the subject but a posting in babalublog comments on an El Pais article that Cuba will allow Cubans in hotels.
El Pais does not comment why the ban was there in the first place. I still remember the day a Sol Melia hotel in Cuba did not allow me to stay. I also wrote to El Pais to complain and they did not bother answering. I always wondered if El Pais was afraid of Fidel Castro or of the Escarrers at Sol Melia
