The eastern province of Santiago de Cuba is betting on inns to create new facilities for tourism in that destination.

The San Basilio Inn, run by the Cuban hotel chain Islazul and the first establishment of its kind owned by the Ministry of Tourism, will be officially inaugurated this month.

Located in an elegant house downtown Santiago de Cuba, the eight-room inn is a major step to materialize the country’s excellent prospects to operate small lodging facilities for families.

According to experts, corporations and groups, such as Cubanacán, are interested in expanding this experience. Cubanacán has carried out feasibility studies in 53 sites both within and without the city’s historic heart.

During a first stage, Santiago de Cuba could count on 400 rooms after transforming old buildings into inns, and during a second stage, it could have 700 rooms, half of the province’s total capacity at present.

Of the three inns whose remodeling may begin this year, an 18-room establishment is located on the busy Enramada Street, very close to the port.
