Cuba Travel News and Information
Hello,
I’m delighted to be invited to contribute to Havana Journal. It’s a honor to support this fine website. I’m looking forward to posting feature articles, travel news, and personal anecdotes, as well as sharing my photos.
For those of you who may not be familiar with my work, I have been involved in profiling Cuba—particularly from the perspective of tourism—for almost two decades.
I’m intimately familiar with every part and every aspect of the island, not least having traveled end to end—literally from Punta San Antonio in the far west to Punta Maisà in the east—on four separate occasions. I stopped counting my visits to Cuba after 30 or so.
I write frequently about Cuba for leading magazines such as National Geographic Traveler, Caribbean Travel & Life, and The Robb Report, and I’m pretty sure every major newspaper in North America has carried one of my travel stories on Cuba. As I type, Caribbean Travel & Life is preparing to run a major feature on Cuba in their June 2007 issue. Look for my forthcoming Cuba stories in future editions of Automotive Traveler, Destinations, and Cuba Absolutely, an exciting new magazine. Hello Chris! You may recall, some years passed, my efforts to carry humanitarian aid to Cuba from Key West, my home for almost 50 years. Alas, after GWBush got into office, the US government (OFAC) throw us into the dungeons of “commie hell”—located in Miami.
Alive and well here in South Carolina and I congratulate you on accepting a post with the journal and I’m looking forward to “Moon Cuba” but I can’t find it here in Columbia, SC.
I’m certainly eager to get that boating crowd from the Florida Keys back to delivering food and medicine to the Cuban people. But it’s a hell of a paddle from here in South Carolina. (Key West simply became a resort for the rich and famous.) I have been back and forth to Cuba a number of times since our boats transported the humanitarian aid throughout the nineties. Now I’m preparing to go live in Santiago (de Cuba) but one last ordeal, I’m afraid: The Cuban government. They sure make things difficult if you try to help. Best of luck! JJY
