The Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the flag establishment in the Island’s tourist sector, was chosen the best in the world among 194 candidates.
A survey carried out by elmundoviajes.com showed that the Cuban facility displaced the Hotel La Mamounia (Morocco) to the second place and the Ritz Hotel, in Paris, to the third position.
The list also includes The Waldorf Astoria, in New York, and Llao Llao, in Bariloche, Argentina.
Cuba also ranked sixth among the best countries in the tourist sector, only preceded by France, Mexico, the United States, Argentina and Great Britain, according to the survey.
In the Best Island category, Cuba was in the first place, followed by Madeira (Portugal), Sicily (Italy), Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) and Corsica (France).
At the same time, the world’s best beaches were the Maya Riviera (Mexico), Bvaro, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Varadero (Cuba), Copacabana e Ipanema (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Algarbe (Portugal).

Now I am a HUGE fan of Cuba and know the Nacional well from standard rooms to suites… I am a fan of the hotel and in it (visiting) at least once per six months for the last 14 years. But come on…. as much as I would like to find this credible, It just is far from the way my eyes see it. I know many of the hotels mentioned (where is The Plaza?) They don’t have taped windows from Hurricane dammage, they offer a decent chicken sandwich because the cooks are not shorting you, there are no ripples in the carpets, nor signs of water damage. There is high speed internet in the rooms, new linens, down pillows, the matresses are changed in increments of six months… etc.
Believe me I enjoy the Hotel, it is not only a landmark (even if the design was borrowed from the contracters of The Breakers) It is a friendly fine hotel. Better than the Waldorf, Ritz, or a Four Seasons? Nah, not yet has it returned to its stature to be in that league. Sure it does have its history, but unfortunately like everything the embargo effects it. This sounds similar to FOX News winning an award for the most balanced news…. Humm.
