Near the city of Matanzas, the provincial capital, are the Bellamar Caves, a true underground treasure that complements the region’s tourist attractions.

Located in one of the hills surrounding the Bay of Matanzas, the Bellamar Caves is the oldest tourist resort in Cuba, as its inauguration took place more than 144 years ago, in November 1862.

The caves run along 23 kilometers, although the 45-minute visit only covers 1,500 meters.

A 159-step staircase allows visitors to go down into the cave, where they can enjoy one of the most impressive sights in the cavern, a 32-century stalactite known as El Manto de Coln (Columbus’ Cloak).
