Barcelo Hotels and Resorts opened its fourth hotel in Cuba, this time on Cayo Santa Maria. The hotel is called Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria. It is a five star hotel with 624 rooms and will be marketed under the exclusive trademark of Barcelo Premium.

This hotel is nicely situated at the waterfront beach area and is part of a comprehensive plan to develop a hotel network across the island of Cuba for Barcelo. Cayo Santa Maria is rapidly developing as a major tourist destination in Cuba. It is one of the most beautiful keys (or cayos) in the Cuban archipelago that is located along the northern coast of Villa Clara.

In addition to this hotel, another three hotels are expected to open in 2009 and 2010 that are designed to complement each other.

This hotel complex is design to eventually have 2000 rooms, a premium club, twenty one restaurants, twenty eight bars, two theaters, a jazz music cafe, a convention center with twenty seven halls and a luxurious spa.

It is located ten kilometers from the local Cayo Las Brujas airport, fifty kilometers from the city of Caibarién and 116 kilometers from international airport of Abel Santa María de Santa Clara.

Currently Barcelo Hotels and Resorts, which opened their first resort in Cuba in 2002, has three other hotels: the Barcelo Solymar Beach Resort and the Barcelo Marina Palace Beach Resort in Varadero and the Barcelo Cayo Largo Beach Resort all adding up to 2,088 rooms.

Barcelo reports that it plans to build another seven hotels; three more in Cayo Santa Maria, two in Santa Lucia, one in Havana and another one in Varadero. No time frame was reported.
