People who know anything about Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air know it is an airline that marches to a different beat.
So why should anybody be surprised that Allegiant’s newest destinations will be places where few Americans have ever been?
Allegiant Travel, the parent company of the airline that specializes in delivering people from small communities to resort cities such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Florida cities such as Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, recently won a contract to supply charter flights from Miami to four cities in Cuba. Flights will…

Traveling to Cuba: between good intentions and poor taste
People who say: “I’d like to go to Cuba before it changes” do not mean to be insulting. They may even have good intentions. They only want to see 50’s Buicks and Fords that seem right out of a Twilight Zone episode, as a retired professor who wore a black beret à la Che Guevara told me. They want to swim in (allegedly) unpolluted waters. And in most cases, they are willing to help the natives. I have sent my mother, who still lives in Havana, numerous packages with Americans friends.…

With an anticipated lessening of travel restrictions to Cuba by the Obama administration, U.S. cruise lines are playing it cool. They’re not going public with their plans, but authorities agree that reopening Cuba to American tourists could give the recession-impacted travel industry a welcome boost.
A survey of cruise lines, for the most part, produced carefully parsed answers about their Cuba plans when government-imposed travel and trade restrictions are lifted. However, a couple cruise lines went on the record about their interest.
In fact, Frank Del Rio, the 54-year-old CPA who founded Oceania…

When asked which of the Caribbean islands is the most beautiful, the debate is endless and almost always without consensus. Barack Obama may well change that. Very few travelers who have hiked the trails through La Sierra de los Organos to the spectacular Vinales Valley, or strolled the white sands of Varadero will vote for anyplace other than Cuba. The only factor standing between Cuba being a travel destination of choice for the U.S. traveler is of course, the U.S. Policy toward Cuba.
But what if the U.S. Policy would change? What are the implications for Cuba, as well as…

The Independent | Simon Calder:
Travel, like life in general, requires judicious risk management, ranging from “Am I a strong enough swimmer to cope with those currents?” and “Should I really have that extra drink?” to “What countries are too dangerous to contemplate?”
Travel insurance companies have to exercise good judgment about risk, so they can offer plenty of advice on that last question. For example, Direct Travel Insurance Services has recently deemed four nations to be so dangerous that “we made a corporate underwriting decision to exclude coverage for travel in, to, or through such countries”.

Cuba welcomed its 2 millionth tourist of 2008 on Friday with a salsa band, strong mojitos and word that the island expects to set a record this year for foreign visitors despite three hurricanes and a global economic crisis.
Authorities hung a red-and-white banner reading “welcome visitor” in five languages just outside the customs area as Air Canada Flight 370 from Toronto touched down at Havana Airport.
“Is this a nice way to start? I’ll say!” said Helen Lueke, a secretary in her 60s from Sherwood Park, Canada, who comes to Cuba about…

I visited the official Cuban website for Cayo Largo del Sur CayoLargoDelSur.cu and found this scrolling news item:
“Cayo Largo is prepared to open for the new Touristic High Season; all hotels will be reopen in November.”
I have not heard anything about the damage to Cayo Largo but I can only imagine the destruction from Hurricane Ike since it went directly over Cayo Largo. I know this is a major tourist destination and repairs are a top priority but being so far off the mainland, I would imagine that it would be…

U.S. District Judge Alan S. Gold issued a preliminary injunction against the law that requires Florida travel agencies that book trips to Cuba to post a $250,000 bond earlier today.
He rules that the law, which took effect July 1, cannot be enforced because it may violate a constitutional mandate that states that the the federal government is responsible for US foreign policy, not individual states.
The law was introduced, support and passed by Cuban-American lawmakers, who want to impede on American citizens’ rights of international travel.
The injunction will remain in effect until a trial can be held…
