With Cuban dictator Fidel Castro ailing and…

An analysis of the potential relationship of Cuba and United States tourism interests by Sergei Khrushchev and two coauthors, published in the November 2007 issue of the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, suggests that the U.S. hospitality industry can begin to help bridge the economic gap between Cuba and the United States.
As the son of the former Russian premier, Khrushchev has the unusual position of living in the U.S. but having dealt with…

Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY) with nine other Republican and Democratic Senators introduced legislation on Thursday that allows all Americans to make normal professional and tourist visits to Cuba. If the bill becomes law, any US travel agent will be able to book transportation, accommodations and other necessary services for visits to Cuba. S 721 also permits the use of US credit cards and other forms of in-country payment.
Virtually identical legislation (HR 654), was introduced in the House of Representatives in January by Charles Rangel (D-NY), the powerful chair of the Ways and Means Committee, and…

In the midst of a widespread federal crackdown on illegal travel to Cuba, the U.S. Treasury Department met Friday in Miami with agencies that specialize in travel to Cuba to go over the rules they must follow to keep their licenses.
Since January, Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has been auditing travel agencies and religious organizations that specialize in travel to Cuba. In the past few months, four of those agencies have had Cuba travel licenses suspended. Six religious organizations have also had their licenses suspended. The Foreign Assets…

Thanks to the extremely narrow restrictions placed on travel to Cuba by the current American administration, it is nearly impossible for the ordinary American to visit that country legally. There are circumstances under which you can travel there, and the humanitarian mission I took in Janauary was duly licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. You, too, may be able to join such a mission, but the organizers will have to endure a great deal of American red tape to get you there. Our government says it is not banning travel to…

A South Florida travel agency has become the target of a U.S. crackdown on illegal travel to Cuba.
The U.S. treasury department has closed down and suspended the license of La Estrella de Cuba, which is one of the biggest Cuba travel agencies in the country, NBC 6 reported.
The Bush administration tightened travel restrictions to the island in 2004, arguing that travel to Cuba benefits the communist regime financially.
Authorities in Washington are now enforcing the restrictions more aggressively.
Critics of the crackdown say it could prompt Fidel…
