At the International Trade Fair in Cuba this week, the wealthy Persian Gulf nation of Qatar announced that the Qatar Diar Real Estate Investment Company will build the the five star “Gran Paraiso” hotel on Cayo Largo, a small tourist island off the south coast of Cuba.

This hotel may be under construction in 2010 and open in 2012 with up to 450 rooms and 60 luxury villas.

Barcelo opens hotel resort in Cayo Santa Maria Cuba

Barcelo Hotels and Resorts opened its fourth hotel in Cuba, this time on Cayo Santa Maria. The hotel is called Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria. It is a five star hotel with 624 rooms and will be marketed under the exclusive trademark of Barcelo Premium.

On October 28, I asked if Cayo Largo was closed because I found some scrolling text on the main tourist website that “all hotels will reopen in November”.

Today I get an email from the Sol Melia newsletter containing this landing page for the newly reopened Sol Pelicano in Cayo Largo Hotel.

I found it odd that NONE of the text used the word “reopened” or the like or even gave any indication that the hotel was closed. So, I figure this is a sly way to quietly reopen a…

Varadero Cuba expecting one million tourists this year

Cuba’s top beach resort has received more than 700,000 tourists to date and the conditions exist for the year to end with a total of one million visitors for the first time in the history of tourism in that province.

“Varadero has been strengthening its position as a destination,” emphasized Amado Acosta Hernández,  Ministry of Tourism delegate in Matanzas province. “We have maintained progressive growth since the second semester of 2007 and,  specifically this year, we are seeing the best results in overall indicators, although we know we can be still more efficient.”

Major investments to improve the tourist facilities of Guardalavaca and to expand the capabilities of city hotels will be undertaken in the province of Holguin due to the increasing demand of tourism travel, announced Manuel Marrero, Minister of Tourism in Cuba.

Habaguanex opens Marques de Prado Ameno hotel in Habana Vieja Cuba

Cuba’s tourism company Habaguanex S.A. announced the opening of the Marques de Prado Ameno hotel in Habana Vieja Cuba, a World Cultural Heritage.
A report by the Cuban Tourism Ministry “MINTUR” says the refurbished hotel will be located close to the Plaza de Armas Square and the Catedral de la Habana. It was named after a prominent family that lived in the colonial house, built in the 19th century that will now receive tourists from around of the world.

Spanish hotel chain Barcelo to build a new hotel in Cayo Santa Maria

Spanish Hotel Group Barcelo is to increase its presence in Cuba"s tourism, with the building of 5,000 new leisure facilities, a digital report on Caribbean News indicated Tuesday.

Caribbean News adds that recent reports from Barcelo Hotels & Resorts, one of the most important consortiums in Spain, has eyes on Santa Maria Key to develop its Beach Resort option, which has earned well-deserved fame in hotels in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, and plans seven new facilities here by 2010.

Two of those hotels will be built by mixed Hispanic-Cuban companies.

Oasis hotels take over two Cubanacan hotels in Cuba

The group Oasis Hotels and Resorts, a property of Globalia, has expanded its presence in the Cuban market, where it took over the administration of two hotels owned by Cubanacan.

The company will run the four-star hotels Oasis Brisas del Caribe and Oasis Brisas Santa Lucia.

The former offers 444 rooms and is located by the beach, 30 kilometers from Varadero’s International Airport.

The latter offers 412 rooms and is on Santa Luc�a beach, in the eastern province of Camaguey.

First Hoteles E brand of hotels launched in Cienfuegos Cuba

The Encanto Palacio Azul Hotel, the first establishment of the Hoteles E brand in Cuba, was inaugurated in the central province of Cienfuegos.

Tourist authorities said that during the first stage, 50 Hoteles E will open in places of historic and patrimonial interest in the cities of Havana, Camaguey, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa.

According to the experts, restoration works in the buildings that will house the hotels have been painstaking to keep their harmony with the environment and to preserve local traditions.
