CUBA TRAVEL SECTION - Havana Journal
By Mark Harvey | Canwest
A family road trip can be stressful. But a driving holiday in Cuba? That could be a recipe for family breakup. It starts as a compromise between the women of the family who want a sunny break from an Edmonton winter, and my desire to see one of the most intriguing countries in the Western Hemisphere before it changes forever.
We decide to split our two weeks in half: a week in all-inclusive resorts and a week in private B&Bs (called casas particulares in Cuba).
Evora Rodriguez’s casa occupies the top floor of a nine-story…

People who know anything about Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air know it is an airline that marches to a different beat.
So why should anybody be surprised that Allegiant’s newest destinations will be places where few Americans have ever been?
Allegiant Travel, the parent company of the airline that specializes in delivering people from small communities to resort cities such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Florida cities such as Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, recently won a contract to supply charter flights from Miami to four cities in Cuba. Air charter operators offering flights to Cuba said Monday that they are ready and willing to ramp up service if passenger demand rises—and they expect it will.

Traveling to Cuba: between good intentions and poor taste
People who say: “I’d like to go to Cuba before it changes” do not mean to be insulting. They may even have good intentions. They only want to see 50’s Buicks and Fords that seem right out of a Twilight Zone episode, as a retired professor who wore a black beret à la Che Guevara told me. They want to swim in (allegedly) unpolluted waters. And in most cases, they are willing to help the natives. I have sent my mother, who still lives in Havana, numerous packages with Americans friends.…
