Another meaningless letter from Fidel Castro

Convalescing leader Fidel Castro criticized the British Royal Navy’s new attack submarine on Monday, saying Cuba could train 75,000 doctors for the US$7.2 billion (euro5.3 billion) price of three subs.

“It illustrates for us, among other things, the sophisticated weaponry being used to maintain the unsustainable order developed by the imperial system of the United States,” the 80-year-old Castro wrote in his latest essays on international affairs.

“It cannot be forgotten that England was for years, until a short time ago, the Queen of the Seas,” Castro wrote. “Of that privileged position, only a fraction remains of the hegemonic power of its ally and leader, the United States.”

British military officials say the HMS Astute, scheduled for launch June 8, will be able to circumnavigate the planet without surfacing, and its nuclear reactor should last throughout the vessel’s 25-year operational life. It will be followed by two more Astute-class submarines, Ambush and Artful.

The navy estimates they will cost US$7.2 billion (euro5.3 billion), more than US$2 billion (euro.5 billion) over original estimates.

“The most surprising thing is that with that sum 75,000 doctors could be trained to attend to 150 million people,” wrote Castro, who has not been seen publicly since undergoing intestinal surgery and stepping aside for his brother Raul, the defense minister, almost 10 months ago. “If they wanted to, they could build 3,000 polyclinics with sophisticated equipment.”

Sorry folks for the harsh title but I’m beyond tired of the meaningless rhetoric.

First, did Castro forget about the Cuban Missile Crisis where he was responsible for pointing nuclear weapons at the US? He conveniently forgets that his pals in Iran are working on their own nuclear program. He conveniently forgets that the communists in China are a nuclear power.

So, should the free world be fighting for it’s survival with doctors or nuclear submarines?

This argument by the “absent President Fidel Castro” (my new permanent title for him) might play to his communist supporters in Cuba and Latin American countries but he is a dying breed. Sure, one can make an argument that socialism is growing in Latin America and that Fidel might have an influence but as the world gets more educated, I believe it gets more free and democratic.

Anyway, until absent President Fidel Castro decides to run his own country, I will not respect his rants against imperialism. His letters carry much less power than his speeches and I’m sure they are falling on “deaf ears” in Cuba since they have nothing to do with Cuba anymore.

One last thing. Can’t he make a video? If an old man is going to sit in a secret room somewhere and rage against the world, can’t he do it on video to give the words a little more power? Apparently not because he would have been doing that for some time now.

The absent President Fidel Castro is obviously incapacitated mentally, physically and/or politically.

How long can this go on before some one or some event disrupts the current status quo in Cuba?
