A man and woman boating off the Florida Keys Sunday afternoon spotted nearly 20 Cuban migrants stranded on a small mangrove island near Key Largo.

The man, who spoke to the Herald by cell phone from his boat, said the couple offered the group of some 20 adults and 8 children food and water.

They also had called the U.S. Coast Guard and were awaiting their arrival. The island is near Card Sound Bridge and Ocean Reef Club.

A spokesperson with the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed they were in route to the scene to investigate
