Refugee smugglers sentenced

MIAMI ó Two smugglers have been sentenced to terms in federal prison for their roles in attempting to bring 15 Cuban refugees to the United States last October, federal authorities announced Monday.

Ruben David Gomez-Borroso, whom federal prosecutors charged was the captain of a go-fast boat intercepted 47 nautical miles southeast of Islamorada last October with 15 refugees aboard, received a 30-month sentence.

Crewmate Jose Antonio Diaz received a 12-month sentence, according to prosecutors.

Both men pleaded guilty to charges of alien smuggling. Gomez-Borroso, who had a deportation order against him, also pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful re-entry of the country.

Judge K. Michael Moore handed down the sentences last Tuesday, according to prosecutors.
