2005 heralded disruptions in Havana residents’ daily lives due primarily to a crisis in the supply of water.

Five primary pumps have either malfunctioned or been out of service during the last 20 days, causing disruptions in Old Havana, Central Havana, El Cerro, Marianao, and La Lisa municipalities of the city, said an employee of the municipal water works who asked not to be named.

There are also serious problems in the Gato and Ariguanabo basins, both important sources of water for the city, according to the same source.

Residents get a little relief by water brought in by tankers, but there are far too few of those to satisfy demand.
