Cuba said Thursday’s death of Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat was a “cause for dismay in the international community.”
The communist island’s major newspapers—all state-owned—featured photos of the deceased leader giving a “V” for victory sign and hailed Arafat for his efforts to create a Palestinian state.

Prior to his death, Arafat spent nearly two weeks in a hospital outside Paris being treated for a number of maladies including a brain hemorrhage and kidney failure.

In 1973, Cuba broke diplomatic ties with Israel in a move of solidarity with the Palestinian people. A year later it established formal relations with the Palestinian Liberation Authority headed by Arafat.
