The two low doors on the right, near the pyramids of cannon balls, open into the death cells, whence no prisoner ever emerged alive. The “shark hole” is immediately beyond the cells. The garrotte and various instruments of torture used in extracting information or confessions from political prisoners, were also located within the walls of this grim fortress.
