The UN World Food Programme says it will earmark $161,000 for the nutrition of children in three eastern Cuban provinces, where a drought has affected food supply.

The WFP said the money would be used to provide extra rations of rice, beans and cooking oil for 114,195 children under the age of five in the provinces of Holguin, Las Tunas and Camaguey.

It said that a lack of rain “has caused severe damage to agriculture and livestock in the region, putting at risk food security for its inhabitants”.

Ramon Perez, director of Cuba’s national weather centre, told the communist weekly Granma International that some areas had not seen rain for more than 20 months.

The drought had resulted in lost harvests and livestock.
