Another one of the 75 Cuban dissidents arrested in last year’s crackdown was freed Wednesday for medical reasons, bringing to five the number of those in the original group to walk free in recent months.

Roberto de Miranda, a 62-year-old teacher, said he was freed early Wednesday because of his severe heart problems and high blood pressure.

“It was a gesture of goodwill on the part of the government” De Miranda said after his release.

The 75 dissidents rounded up during the March 2003 crackdown were charged with working with U.S. officials to undermine Cuba’s socialist system - something they denied. They were later sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to 28 years.
