An international rights watchdog group is demanding that Cuba release about 75 dissidents the government sentenced to long prison terms.

Amnesty International says in a report released Wednesday that the dissidents are “prisoners of conscience” who must be set free immediately and without conditions. The group says it fears for the activists’ lives.

In March, Cuba began a crackdown on dissidents, and sentenced about 80 of them to between six and 28 years in prison after summary trials. A few weeks later, President Fidel Castro’s government killed three convicted hijackers by firing squad.

In its report, Amnesty is also calling on the United States to remove its embargo against Cuba, saying it negatively affects human rights on the island.
