Havana.- The Cuban program against AIDS will receive a financial assistance from the United Nations, which will grant 26 million dollars to a five-year project.

The said initiative, sponsored by the World Fund against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, will be supervised in Cuba by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Although Cuba’s HIV-AIDS rate is among the lowest in the Caribbean (less than 0.1 percent of adults suffering from the disease), the country is situated in a region that has the highest infection rate in the world.

The project will focus on groups that are vulnerable to HIV, including young people, and will provide specialized care to AIDS patients. As part of Cuba’s nationwide strategy against HIV-AIDS, the project is aimed at promoting safe sex among vulnerable groups and the population in general, especially young people.
