The Spanish Foreign Minister recently visited Cuba and we found several news stories coming out after the visit so I thought we’d sum it up…

Raul says he’s committed to economic reform . It appears that one of the reasons the Foreign Minister went to Cuba is in order to get $450 million dollars in back payments owed to Spanish businesses from the Cuban government. (Glad to see that Raul is committed to economic reform. Right. Honoring debt obligations would be economic reform for Cuba.)

The FM says that he will lobby the EU on behalf of Cuba to get sanctions eased or lifted regarding human rights.

Cuba will get $50million in aid from Spain. At least Spain isn’t kidding themselves by calling this money a loan. Cuba already owes Spain businesses $450million. Maybe Cuba will use this new $50million from Spain to pay the Spanish businesses. How’s that for Cuban accounting practices?

So, what did the FM get for his trip? Cuban dissident Nelson Alberto Aguiar Ramirez has been released from jail.

Any other countries want to come to Cuba, get promises of economic reform so they can get $450million paid to their businesses, give $50million in aid, go to bat at the EU for Cuba on human rights all in order to get one political prisoner released.

You’re doing a great job Raul. Way to pick up from Fidel and continue driving Cuba deeper and deeper into the ground.
