Cuba’s Elections: A New Law to Allow the People to Choose

Inspired by the ideals proclaimed in the Cuban Forum Campaign, we have submitted a citizens’ petition to the offices of the National Assembly of People’s Power, which calls for the Electoral Law, Law No. 72, to be repealed and for a new electoral law to be approved that will guarantee the right of Cuban citizens to elect and be elected.

Oswaldo Payá is Honored with Prize in Spain. New Generations [Nuevas Generaciones (NNGG)] of the regional Extremadura Popular Party has awarded Oswaldo Payá the “Liberty Oak” prize. The prize, which is being offered for the second time, recognizes the work of individuals, associations or collectives who struggle for liberty. In its first year it was awarded to María del Mar Blanco, president of the Miguel Ángel Blanco Foundation and sister of the Popular Party councilor who was kidnapped and assassinated by ETA. The resident of New Generations of Extremadura, Juan Parejo, made the announcement at a press conference on September 5. In his speech, Parejo explained the Payá has spent decades in the struggle for liberty and has “sacrificed his life and that of his family in the effort to bring democracy and liberty to Cuba.” He stated that the news had already been communicated to Mr. Payá, but he is denied permission to travel by Cuban authorities. The prize will be accepted by his brother and Christian Liberation Movement representative, Carlos Payá.
