Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez released a statement that he received a letter from President Raul Castro on Sunday and will announce the date of the Cuban leader’s visit soon.

Chavez said today that the visit could take place by this weekend and added that he was honored by the fact that President Castro chose Venezuela over Brazil, China, Russia and other countries to be his first official destination outside of Cuba.

It was reported in September of 2007, before Raul Castro officially became President of Cuba, that he made a secret trip to Italy and may have even toured a golf course while there.

President Castro is expected to visit Russia some time in early 2009 while Russian President Medvedev will visit Cuba on November 27.
