MEMBERS of the 15th U.S.-Cuba 15th Friendship Caravan are to meet today with relatives of the Cuban Five, who are unjustly serving harsh prison sentences in the U.S. for combating terrorism.

During the get-together, they will learn about the current situation of Gerardo Hernndez, Rene Gonzlez, Ramon Labaino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzlez, convicted by a Miami court for collecting information on southern Florida extremist groups with a long history of terrorist activities against Cuba.

The inter-religious Pastors for Peace foundation, which sponsors the caravan, was founded 36 years ago by Lucius Walker, a Protestant minister from New Jersey, and is part of the international movement that advocates the liberation of the Cuban Five.

This afternoon, the 120 members of the caravan’s 15th contingent, whose ages range from 10 to 91, will divide up into groups to visit the provinces of Pinar del Ro, Havana, Matanzas and Cienfuegos, to tour sites of historic, social and economic interest.

This project to defy the U.S. blockade against Cuba began in 1992. The current expedition of solidarity is made up of citizens from the United States, Mexico, Germany, Denmark, Britain, Canada and Holland.

The volunteers arrived in Havana early Saturday morning with 126 tons of humanitarian aid for the Cuban people, in open defiance of the blockade, particularly the recent measures to intensify it adopted by the George W. Bush administration.

Washington’s new regulations went into effect June 30, and among other things, severely restrict travel by Cuban-Americans to the island, as well as the sending of remittances to relatives and visits by U.S. cultural and academic groups.
