U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said Tuesday Robert Werner will become the new director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Snow said Werner will take over the position at the Treasury Oct. 1, succeeding Richard Newcomb, who said earlier this month he was leaving the Treasury Department after 17 years as OFAC director.
Werner is currently the Treasury Department’s assistant general counsel for enforcement and intelligence.
He was previously counselor to the Treasury’s office of the general counsel and chief of staff at the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
OFAC is responsible for the U.S. government’s 29 sanction programs against targeted foreign countries, terrorists, international drug traffickers and dealers in massively destructive weapons.
