Ernesto Guevara and Hilda Gadea met in Guatemala in 1953 as members of the political exile community. Gadea was with Guevara during the tumultuous period in his life that turned him from an intellectual theorist to a dedicated revolutionary.  Hilda shared Che’s revolutionary ideals, guided and inspired him intellectually, helped shape his convictions, and introduced him to Fidel Castro, a meeting that would change the history of Cuba forever.

Against this backdrop, Gadea offers insight into their long courtship, four years of marriage, and the birth of their daughter, Hildita. Including letters from Che to his dear Hildita during his travels, this account sheds new light on the man remembered as one of the best-loved icons of the twentieth century.  First published in 1972, this fully revised and updated edition includes a new foreword by Hilda’s brother Ricardo.

Hilda Gadea was the first female Secretary of the Economy for the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance in Peru but was exiled in 1948.  She worked for the Guatemalan government as an economist and lived in Mexico and Cuba, advancing the same revolutionary politics as Che.  She passed away in Havana in 1974.
