“The Embargo Bash,” an event to bring awareness about the U.S. embargo on Cuba, will be held from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Lawrence.

There will be speakers and bands at the event at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. in downtown Lawrence.

Americans are not allowed to travel to Cuba except under certain circumstances approved by the Treasury Department. Those violating the ban can be subject to fines up to $220,000 and 10 years in prison per violation.

In the past year, the federal government has stepped up its prosecution efforts. Lawrence resident Bob Augelli recently was fined $37,000 for four trips in 1998 and 1999. The fine was negotiated down to $2,500.

In other trips that were approved by the government, Augelli has worked with Kansas crop artist Stan Herd in Cuba. Herd is trying to get the Treasury Department to reissue his license so he can continue working on earth sculptures in Cuba.

Bill Martinez, a lawyer responsible for bringing the Buena Vista Social Club to American audiences, will attend. Also appearing will be Cuban-born artist Fito Garche and Kevin Willmott, director/producer of “C.S.A..: The Confederate States of America,” a film recently featured at the Sundance Film Festival.

Donations raised at the event will be used for the Rosa Blanca Project and to offset Augelli’s $2,500 fine.

Great for Augelli but what a ridiculous foreign policy!
