On a recent trip to Manhattan, I took these photos of the Jose Marti statue located at the Artists’ Gate which is the entrance to the Park at 59th Street and Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue).

The inscription reads:

Apostle of Cuban Independence, Leader of the People’s of America and defender of human dignity.

His literary genius and with his political foresight he was born in Havana on January 28 1853 for fifteen years of his life he lived in the city of New York.

He died in action at Dos Rios in Oriente Province on May 19 1895.

"I have lived in the monster and I know its entrails”

On May 18, 1895, the day before his fall in combat fighting for the independence of the island, José Martí, the Cuban National Hero, wrote this unfinished letter to his intimate friend Mexican Manuel Mercado and it is considered his political testament, in which he expresses his anti-imperialism and his struggle to prevent “the United States from spreading through the Antilles as Cuba gains its independence, and from empowering with that additional strength our lands of America.”
