This is THE TIME of the summer for you to take action on easing the embargo on travel to Cuba. If you can take just ONE action this summer, NOW is the time. We anticipate that several amendments easing and/or ending the travel ban will be offered on the floor of the House NEXT WEEK, probably Wednesday or Thursday. Heres what we expect and what were
asking you to do. We emphasize its urgency!
* Flake Amendment on cutting off funding for enforcement of the full
* Davis Amendment on cutting off funding for enforcement of the
restrictions on Cuban-American travel;
* Lee Amendment on cutting off funding for enforcement of the
restrictions on educational travel and exchanges;
* Rangel Amendment on cutting off funding for enforcement of the full
Call (preferred method of contacting members of Congress), email or fax your representative with the following message:
NOW IS THE TIME TO END THE TRAVEL BAN TO CUBA. VOTE YES ON ALL
AMENDMENTS ON THE TRANSPORATION-TREASURY APPROPRIATIONS BILL (on the floor of the House next week) WHICH WILL HELP END THE BAN ON TRAVEL TO CUBA.
Members need to be bombarded with this message until the vote happens. Please call, and have everyone you know call. Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121 or http://www.house.gov
NOTE: Many members who recently changed their votes on easing the
embargo took money in the past year from the pro-embargo US-Cuba Democracy PAC and need special attention from their constituents. Please urge members who have taken hard-line PAC money to support the interests of their constituents, not those of a pro-embargo PAC or the interests of members of Congress from south Florida. You can find a listing of these members and other swing vote members from your state at our website at http://www/lawg.org/countries/cuba/top_90.htm And you can check on the details of US-Cuba Democracy PAC money accepted by individual congresspeople by going to http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/pacgot.asp?strID=C00387720&Cycle=2004
New members deserve special attention, as the anti-engagement forces
are trying to solidify their votes in the NO column. Follow this link to
find out how these new members voted: http://www.lawg.org/countries/cuba/new_mbrs_06_22.htm . If one of
these members is yours, please ask her/him to support engagement with Cuba and VOTE YES to end the travel ban when votes happen on the floor of the House next week.
