As Cuba watchers know, the Catholic church in Cuba has negotiated the release of 52 political prisoners from Cuban jails. Unfortunately they ALL have to leave the country and live in exile but that’s another conversation.

The point of this article is to pose the statement that Fidel Castro approves of the release of the dissidents… and indirectly to HR 4645.

Visit to National Center for Scientific Research

On July 7, Fidel Castro made a “surprise” visit to the National Center for Scientific Research (CNIC)

China Daily (not exactly unbiased free speech) started their propaganda piece with “Two Cuban journalists showed on Saturday in their personal blogs some unpublished photos of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro…” Norelys Morales and Rosa Baez published the images on their personal pages, which showed Castro dressed in a white sportswear, smiling and talking to people around him.

“He is thin but looks good. He greeted us and blew kisses. People waited in the lobby to see him when he was leaving,” said Rosa Baez, writer for the Communist propaganda website Bloggers and Correspondents of the Revolution http://bloguerosrevolucion.ning.com/profiles/blogs/fidel-visito-el-centro

“Here I attached some photos shot with a cell phone. Though not in good quality they did show something.”

She may have been surprised but this was a carefully crafted photo op with an international meaning.

To me it is clear Fidel Castro (or his handlers) wanted to get the word out. See the four points below. Which ones are true?

1. Fidel Casto is alive. Apparently they want to show that he is just a kind, frail, old man who is loved by millions… okay, thousands… okay tens of people.

2. Fidel has NOTHING to say about the dissident release therefore he approves it.

3. Fidel has NOTHING to say about HR 4645 therefore he has no plans to sabotage it.

4. He has changed his athletic wear brand from Adiddas to Nike. Apparently Nike wrote him a bigger check. I guess they want to go after the ailing Dictator market.

Although I will say it is odd that professional propagandist Rosa Baez was allowed to post her cell phone photos of Fidel but then again, those “candid” photos could be part of the marketing of the event too. Sort of like Castro allowing to give the impression that the average Cuban can take photos with their cell phones and post them to the internet without censorship… don’t you believe it for a second.

    Update:

Fidel Castro will appear on Cuban television tonight to talk about events in the Middle East.

We all know even if Fidel Castro only talks about the Middle East (a VERY slim change that he will only talk about one subject) that his re-emergence in the public spotlight is NOT to talk about the Middle East. That I am sure of.

    So…

    1. Is this a diversion of interest away from the political prisoner release?

    2. Will he mention the political prisoner release?

    3. Will he say something to sabotage HR 4645 and any attempt by the US to lift the Embargo as he has done many times before?

    4. Will he make Raul look like his own personal bitch? Hard words I know but if Fidel jumps back into the spotlight, Raul Castro will look like Fidel’s bitch and will therefore have even less respect from the Cuban people.

    5. Will Fidel condone the prisoner release by his absence of mentioning it?

    6. Will he condone HR 4645 by not mentioning it?

I guess we’ll find out tonight whether he approves or disapproves of the prisoner release and HR 4645.

Clearly all Fidel Castro talked about was the Middle East and NOTHING about Cuba.

Not only is that insulting to the Cuban people but it is CLEAR Castro speak saying that he supports the release of political prisoners AND HR 4645.

One can also read into his televised appearance that Raul is in complete control.

Fidel Castro made his third public appearance within one week.

What’s with the new Fidel Castro? Just a kind old man image now?
