* Present-day Cuba is dominated by a Communist regime similar to those which disappeared in 1989 in Eastern Europe. For more than 46 years, a one man rule and only one political party has prevailed; opinions that differ from those propagated by the state are not tolerated, and Amnesty International has declared Cuba the country with the most prisoners of conscience in the world. The financial crisis has immersed the nation in total misery: the average monthly income does not reach 10 dollars. In short, all human rights are violated.
* Amidst this situation, several hundred unauthorized independent organizations have decided to join and form the Assembly to Promote Civil Society in Cuba, and meet peacefully in Havana this coming 20th of May, in order to debate ways of how to democratize Cuba.
* It is easy to understand that, under these circumstances and, facing the power of a totalitarian State, our project needs the support and encouragement of as many possible men and women of good will in the world.
* We thus respectfully invite you to write to us and provide us with your valuable opinions and, if you wish, send us your support to our peaceful efforts.
We hope to be able to respond each and every one of you with great regard and gratitude.
In our responses we will include the link to our website so you can visit us, and will also provide you with our telephone in Havana.
Thanking you in advance for your courteous attention to this letter, we remain
