Mexico City Ě The Cuban ambassador to Mexico expressed regret that relations between the two countries are neither “what they used to be nor what both countries deserve.”

“But I’m hopeful that we can recover lost ground because there is no other Latin American country that shares the friendship and concern that Mexico and Cuba do,” Jorge Bola˝os said in a statement published by newspapers in the Mexican capital on Tuesday.

The ambassador made reference to the countries’ rocky relationship since early last year, which came to a head on April 17 when Mexico, for the second consecutive year, voted in favor of a resolution by the U.N. Human Rights Commission condemning the violation of human rights in Cuba.
