“What to Expect”

MODERATOR: Jaime Suchlicki, Director, Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS), and Emilio Bacardi Moreau Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Miami. Mr. Suchlicki is Editor of “Cuban Affairs” a quarterly electronic journal published by ICCAS and the author of Cuba: From Columbus to Castro; Mexico: From Montezuma to the Rise of PAN; and Breve Historia de Cuba.

PANEL: Brian Latell, a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS).  Dr. Latell was a Professor of International Relations at Georgetown University.  Dr. Latell served as National Intelligence Officer for Latin America from 1990-1994.  His work as a Latin America specialist for the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Intelligence Council began in the 1960s.  He was awarded the CIA’s Distinguished Intelligence Medal. Latell has published extensively on Cuba, Mexico, other Latin America subjects, and on foreign intelligence issues.  His latest book is After Fidel: The Inside Story of Castro’s Regime and Cuba’s Next Leader.

Jorge Castañeda, former Foreign Minister of Mexico (2000-2003), is Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation and Global Distinguished Professor of Politics and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NewYork University.  Dr. Castañeda received undergraduate degrees from both Princeton University and Universite de Paris (Pantheon-Sorbonne), an M.A. from Ecole Pratique de Hautes Etudes, Paris, and his Ph.D. in the History of Economics from the University of Paris. He has taught at Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM), Princeton and Berkeley. Dr. Castañeda was a Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (1985-87), and was a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research and Writing Grant Recipient (1989-1991).  He is a regular columnist for the Mexican daily Reforma, The Los Angeles Times and Newsweek International.
