THE renowned researcher of Italian origin, a professor at John Hopkins University, Washington DC, has sent us the following message of solidarity:

Dear friends,

I wish to enthusiastically sign the declaration: For Cuba. To the conscience of the world.

Sadly, U.S. aggression towards Cuba is nothing new; it has been going on since 1898 when the United States seized the independence that had been won with the blood and the bravery of (the island’s) children; in effect since 1803 when Jefferson first began dreaming of annexing Cuba.

But what has made the current situation more worrying than ever is that with Bush, the United States has become more and more aggressive and arrogant, trampling over the United Nations just as it always trampled over the Organization of American States (OAS). Meanwhile, the Western European countries that are so brave when it is about taking sanctions against Cuba, do not dare to impose the very least sanction even a moral one on the United States for its invasion of Iraq.”

Gleijeses is the author of Missions in Conflict. Havana, Washington, Africa. 1959-1975. It was published in the United States in 2002; the Cuban edition was launched at the Havana Book Fair in February of this year.

During the 2002 annual session of the Organization of American Historians in the United States, the book received the prize for best book in the history and foreign politics category.

Piero commented on the award:

“What Missions in Conflict says…is the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but it’s a truth that hurts many here. It is very lovely above all at such a sad time when the imperial arrogance of the United States seems to know no limits that, that the voice of Mandela can be heard through my book: “What country has a better history of altruism than the one that Cuba has manifested in its relations with Africa?*”

A strong embrace,

Piero Gleijeses
