The competition, to be held in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, will also be attended by representatives of various Cuban provinces. On this occasion, the organizing committee will hold the classic 10-, 21- and 42-kilometer races, in addition to a mass race in which winners will be awarded by categories. This year, the marathon will be dedicated to the 488th anniversary of Santiago de Cuba and Jose Martí‘s 151st birthday. The 1st Jose Martí International Marathon was held on January 28, 2001, and was attended by athletes from Belgium, Holland and Austria. The irregular characteristics of the circuit in which the race will take place will prevent athletes from clocking better times, but some of Cuba’s best long-distance runners will take part in the competition, as part of their training for the National Olympics and Marabana.
