Any information for a Canadian hoping to study at ELAM?

I’ve been trying to get in contact with someone at La Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina for a couple of months now. No one from my country, Canada, is currently enrolled, but according to newspapers the school is open to applications from Canada.

My problem is actually getting an application to them. I have been to the Cuban consulate in Toronto, who told me to call the Department of Education at the embassy in Ottawa. I’ve left a couple of messages for them, but nothing back so far.

I’ve wanted to go to this school since it opened, but never really thought I had a chance until I read this quote from Gillian Jimenez, the Cuban Minister for Foreign Affairs: “If we had an application from Canada, we would evaluate it. The program could be opened to include Canadians.”

All I want to do is make my case to someone. I am committed, I am willing, I think that if I could just speak to someone who’s in a position to give me a spot at ELAM I could convince them. Unfortunately right now I’m having problems getting through the red tape.

Help me! Are you a current student, either at this school or another Cuban university? Have you applied in the past? Anyone with any advice or information would be doing me a great favour by posting it here.

Thank you so much in advance,

Kiam Fazal

EDIT: I should also say that I’ve been in touch with IFCO/Pastors For Peace, who were very encouraging but couldn’t really do anything for me, being based in the USA as they are.
