The eastern Cuban province of Las Tunas increased exports of Havana cigars in 2007.

According to estimates, a local factory in Puerto Padre made more than 2.5 million cigars for the international market.

The increase in production was accompanied by improved quality.

In addition to that company, Las Tunas has two other cigar factories, which altogether have produced more than 15 million cigars for the domestic market over the past few years.

The cigar industry is one of the major sectors in Cuba’s economy, which produced an average of 178 million cigars for exports a year during the first five years of this century, according to the National Statistics Office.
