RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil—The U.S. team of college baseball players finally found its match at the Pan American Games. No surprise that it was Cuba that stopped their strong run.

The Cubans won their 10th straight Pan Ams gold Friday morning with a 3-1 victory. Although the Americans had won all four of their games to get to the final, they were no match for the solid pitching of Adiel Palma. The Americans managed only four hits off Palma, who went 2-0 in Rio, and got one more off Pedro Luis Lazo, who got the save with 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Jacob Thompson of Virginia was the loser as the United States used five pitchers who allowed 10 hits.

Cuba took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run double by Alexander Mayeta, and added a run in the fourth. The Americans answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth, driven in by Justin Smoak of South Carolina.

Cuba, which uses professional players in all international baseball tournaments, has won every Pan Ams gold since 1971. It’s the sixth time the American have finished with silver.
