Case of Cuban Exile Could Test the U.S. Definition of Terrorist

by Tim Weinger
published May 9

MIAMI, May 5 - From the United States through Latin America and the Caribbean, Luis Posada Carriles has spent 45 years fighting a violent, losing battle to overthrow Fidel Castro. Now he may have nowhere to hide but here.

Mr. Posada, a Cuban exile, has long been a symbol for the armed anti-Castro movement in the United States. He remains a prime suspect in the bombing of a Cuban commercial airliner that killed 73 people in 1976. He has admitted to plotting attacks that damaged tourist spots in Havana and killed an Italian visitor there in 1997. He was convicted in Panama in a 2000 bomb plot against Mr. Castro. He is no longer welcome in his old Latin America haunts.

Mr. Posada, 77, sneaked back into Florida six weeks ago in an effort to seek political asylum for having served as a cold war soldier on the payroll of the Central Intelligence Agency in the 1960’, his lawyer, Eduardo Soto, said at a news conference last month.

But the government of Venezuela wants to extradite and retry him for the Cuban airline bombing. Mr. Posada was involved “up to his eyeballs” in planning the attack, said Carter Cornick, a retired counterterrorism specialist for the Federal Bureau of Investigation who investigated Mr. Posada’ role in that case. A newly declassified 1976 F.B.I. document places Mr. Posada, who had been a senior Venezuelan intelligence officer, at two meetings where the bombing was planned.

Frankly speaking I do not believe the U.S. has the cojones to put this individual in jail or extradite him. Mr. Bush and company owe the last two presidential elections in great part to the Miami crowd.

really sad that most of the world just has no idea what Cuba really is, what has happened, what it has gone through as a people to build itself as an independent country, of united people. Yet the war on terror still goes on, with the worlds largets terrorists leading the charge.

I cant remember if it is terror or humanity the war is against, they seem to be merging the 2 together quite closely. If there was any justice the CIA would be on trial. Not that they act independently of other US govenrment and corporate interests, so i know that wouldn;t happen.

probably all well known by all on the forum, but i just found this 2 days ago, one of the most terrorfying documents i have ever read. I imagined this is how they plan to mess the world up, but to actually see it written down. Do these people have any sense of humanity at all?

What is it that makes people seperate themselves from others, is it just racism, or is it all around the fact that the people with money want to make sure it stays that way at absolutely any cost?

These acts are the most damning things on the worlds progress. Some of the most inspiring people of all time like Che Guevara were hunted and killed? The guy wandered the country, opened his eyes to the real problems, listened and lived with the people, and then dedicated his life to a solution, what more can you ask of a human? If theres was just a few of these people and they werent hunted, the world would be a very different place.

COINCIDENCES, RAMDOM CHANCE, ACTS OF GOD OR, IMPERIAL GREED PRETEXES?

After the success of its first Caesars almost two centuries ago, the Empire is always searching for a justification. It needs to justify its dark and impure movements in order to deceive and receive the publicís consent. With the attention of a mathematician, it calculates the balance between losses and benefits. The overriding question is always the same: how to gain the greatest amount of wealth and spill the least volume of national blood?  These transactions have had an unequal history, but they all have never lost the unmistakable seal of blood, destruction and death.

In February 1848, the Mexican-American war of dubious origins ends, moving more than half of the historic Mexican territory to the Empire, which increases its territory by 66%.

In February 1898, almost 30 years after the Cubans began their independence war, the battleship Maine exploded from within while anchored inside Havana harbor. 260 sailors including two officers perished. The Spanish-American war followed.

In May 1915, almost three years after the beginning of the war, the Lusitania transatlantic liner sank when a mysterious submarine torpedoed it. 128 Americans on board lost their lives. The US enters World War I.

In December 1941, after failing to alert the US Navy fleet docked in Hawaii and ignoring intelligence reports that Japan would attack on early December, Pearl Harbor was bombed. 2,300 were killed. The US enters World War II.

Phantom attacks on the USS Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin gave Washington free reign to unleash the full force of the US military in the Viet Nam War.

In September 2001, the twin towers in New York were destroyed and thousands were killed. Were US Intelligence reports ignored and/or was the Defense Department negligent? The war against terror is unleashed; the US bombs and starts a war in Afghanistan. Throughout the end of 2002 and early 2003, the whole world was extensively and continuously bombarded with news about the existence of WMD in Iraq and the Iraqi connection to Afghanistan. The US bombs and occupies Iraq. No WMD ever found, and no connection ever proved.

All justifies and leads to political pretexts for retaliatory wars and huge increases in military budgets. Does it all seem like random chance happenings or do all of the above appear to have a certain recurring note or communality?

Posada will receive a “Get out of Jail” free card because he’ a former CIA agent, and he knows stuff that can embarrass the Bush Admin. (or any other U.S. President for that matter).

So how about giving him another chance against Fidel? Maybe this time, he will get it right and not end up killing an Italian tourist or harmless Cuban civilians. . .  wink wink
