Holguin will start the second stage of the Vaccination Campaign against polio from April 24 to 30, administering the vaccine to over 49,625 children from this eastern province.

A second dose will be supplied to some 36,823 infants from 30 days to three years old, who were given the vaccine in the first stage of the campaign that took place from February 27 to March 5.

Children from 11 months and 29 days and up to 9 years will receive a reactivation vaccine.

Dr. Clara Fernandez, head of the immunization program in the province, explained that the vaccination will be conducted in the healthcare clinics of the community.

Dr Fernandez recommended not giving the vaccine to children suffering from fever, diarrhea, vomiting or those who are receiving medical treatment with immunosuppressive drugs, and waiting 30 minutes before and after the administration of the vaccine before giving food or water.

The Vaccination campaigns against polio began in 1962 in Cuba, where the immunization program includes the protection of children against 13 diseases by the supply of 11 vaccines, eight of them prepared in Cuba.

Along with this second stage of the 48th Campaign against polio, the Week for Vaccination in the Americas will take place, when Cuba will implement the recovery of schemes to increase coverage of prevention against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus.
