Cuban specialists are successfully drilling a horizontal oil well, considered the largest of its kind in direction to the ocean. The work is being carried out without the participation of foreign partners for the first time.
According to Itar-tass news agency, when the project began to be implemented last January 8, the Cuban specialists managed to drill the 1900-meter long well, whose depth was calculated at 6,000 meters, while the drilling activity from firm land towards the sea will cover some 5,000 meters at an 81-degree lean, said the head of the project, Ivan Louis.
The project is underway in western Matanzas province with strict observance of ecological and technological standards. “This is very important if we bear in mind the nearby Varadero tourist resort, which hosted over one million tourists last year,” said the executive.
The drilling activity, which sparks optimistic results for the production of oil and gas, is expected to conclude this year. In order to undertake the task, the Cuban specialists were trained in Canada, the reports explains.
Last year, Cuba produced four million tons of oil and gas, translated into 1, 3 percent increase compared to 2007. With its local production the Caribbean island meets nearly 50 percent of its oil needs, while the remaining portion is purchased under favored conditions in Venezuela.
