Work on constructing the fourth wind farm in Cuba, is being carried out in Punta Rasa, about three kilometres from the coastal city of Gibara, in Holguin.

Luis San Juan, director of the National Group for Renewable Energy, told AIN that six Golwind S-50 machines with Chinese technology will be installed, which will have a capacity of 4.5 megawatts.

When the wind farm is completed, the potential of renewable energy should reach 9.6 megawatts which will be the biggest electricity generator in Cuba.

He explained that the necessary equipment for the construction of the new wind farm is already stored in the territory.

Gibara II should come into service in the current year, thanks to the experience of the builders and investors during the installation of the Gibara I wind farm that began operating in 2008.

The use of wind energy in electricity generation is a developing alternative in Cuba, as a source to produce power at low cost and without polluting the environment.

Studies in the country for the growing use of wind energy, have registered over 30 possible areas, of which eight are located in the eastern region.

Details on this matter were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Renewable Energy, Energy Saving and Education, held in Havana, Cuba.
