Tuesday will witness the start of the “Festival del Caribe” (Caribbean Festival) in the easternmost Cuban provinces of Guantanamo and Santiago de Cuba. Over 1,000 guests from some 20 countries are attending this year’s festivities.
The “Fiesta del Fuego” (Fiesta of Fire), as the celebration is also known, will run through July 9, with this 27th holding of the event being dedicated to the Dominican Republic.

Poetry, music, painting, theater, country hoedowns and culinary arts will all be featured at the festival, said Orlando Verges, the director of Casa del Caribe, the institution organizing the festival.

Cultural development in the region will be the focus of the colloquium “The Caribbean that Unites Us,” which will open on Wednesday with seminars by Dominican Marcio Veloz Maggiolo, Cuba’s Yolanda Wood and a speech by Ruben Silie, the secretary general of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).

On Wednesday July 4, a variety show at the Heredia Theater will pay homage to the 231st anniversary of the independence of the United States.  The evening gala will highlight Dominican artists Sonia Silvestre, Victor Victor, Manuel Jimenez and India Canela.

The opening “Serpent Parade” is scheduled for Thursday July 5, winding through the streets of downtown Santiago.
