Cuba and China sign biotechnolgy agreement

President of the Chinese Sciences Academy, Lu Yong Xiang, and Secretary of the Cuban Council of State, Jose Millar Barrueco, signed an agreement in Havana on Tuesday on cooperation in the fields of biotechnology and biomedical sciences.

The Chinese specialist, who on Wednesday is wrapping up his visit to Cuba, noted that relations between his country and Cuba in the area of sciences are increasing to the benefit of both countries.

The agreement seeks to boost mutual development in the areas of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, neurosciences, cognitive sciences and neuro-imaging, cloning of animal cells and mother cells, as well as the application of biotechnology in medicine and agriculture.

Yong Xiang and Cuban vice-Minister of Sciences, Technology and Environment, Fernando Gonzalez, also inked an accord to encourage new policies concerning sciences, technological innovation and the protection of intellectual property.

The document embraces basic and applied sciences, recyclable energy sources, nanotechnology, new materials, bioinformatics, information technologies, natural resources and environment.
