The national boxing championship of Cuba, “Playa Giron Boxing Championship”, will start in central Sancti Spiritus on Monday, spiced by the participation of several medal winners from international tournaments.

Among them is two-time Olympic Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, considered the best amateur boxer in the world by many.

Rigondeaux, winner of Olympic gold medals in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, will seek his eighth Cuban Champion title, in the same city where he lost the crown in 1999 to Waldemar Fonst; the only time he lost it.

This is the third time Sancti Spiritus celebrates a National Boxing Championship, after being the host in 1988 and 1999.

Many will watch light middleweight Inocente Fiss, who could equal the number of National Champion titles achieved by two-time Olympic Champion Hector Vinent, now out of active competition.

Fiss will have to face Sancti Sp┬íritus’ native Yudel Johnson, who was Olympic runner-up in Athens 2004 and now wants to reign in a division in which Fiss was the king.

The tournament starts Monday January 15 and continues until January 25.
