Sancti Spiritus maintains a half-game lead over Havana and Industriales in Group B of the 2006-2007 Cuban Baseball League after winning Sunday 6-1 over Guantanamo. In Group D Santiago de Cuba (8-4 over Cienfuegos) and Granma (6-3 over Havana) are tied for first.

Sancti Spiritus got excellent relief pitching from Yoen Socarras (3-1), who took the mound in the second inning and stayed on until the end, striking out seven Guantanamo batters. Yunier Mendoza, 3-for-5, and Osdelvis Bernal, 2-for-3, drove in two runs each for the winners.

Meanwhile, Industriales got a pitching gem from Sandy Ojito (3-1) who went the route needing only 88 pitches. A timely double from Doelsys Linares knocked in two of Industriales’ three runs in the fourth inning. Last year’s national champions are now a half game behind Sancti Spiritus.

Cienfuegos outfielder Jose Dariel Abreu hit a grand slam in the third to tie the game at 4-4 with Santiago de Cuba. However, Cienfuegos couldn’t hold back the home team’s offense as Rolando Merino blasted a homer and Leodanis Menendez quieted bats retiring the last eight batters.

The tie in Group D held tight as Granma won its second consecutive game over Havana on the strong pitching of Alexei Rodriguez (1-0) who struck out seven. Lazaro Cedeno had three RBIs for Granma including a two-run homer in the top of the ninth that broke open a close game.

In other action, the Isla de la Juventud escaped from a series sweep against Ciego de Avila on a three-run first inning led by an RBI double by Michel Enriquez and a single by clean-up hitter Livan Sanchez that drove in two more. Omar Licourt (2-3) allowed two unearned runs in 7.1 innings, on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Lefthander Sergio Espinosa got the final five outs and the save for Ciego de Avila.

Two homers by a batter isn’t always enough to win a game. Michel Fors hit two for Metropolitianos (his fifth and sixth of the season) but the team was blasted 12-5 by Las Tunas as Joan Carlos Pedroso, 2-for-5 with a home run and Yordanis Scull 2-for-4, drove in four runs each.

The news couldn’t have been better for Camaguey fans as their top starter Vicyohandri Odelin (3-3) went seven strong innings allowing only one unearned run with five strikeouts and three walks in a game that was without extra base hits.

After 5 hours and 20 minutes and 14 innings, Villa Clara defeated Pinar del Rio 5-4 with Yoandry Ruiz (2-1) getting the win in relief.
